The Yorkshire Ridings Society was founded
in 1974, to protect the Yorkshire identity threatened by local government changes made
then and since.
Yorkshire is the East, North and West Ridings and the ancient City of York, and was established by the Danes in the 9th Century. Only in 1888 did Parliament create Ridings County Councils to administer Yorkshire, and they were not the same as the real Ridings. Likewise subsequent local government changes do not affect Yorkshire and its Ridings.
They are distinct geographical areas.
'The new county boundaries are administrative areas, and will not alter the traditional
boundaries of counties, nor is it intended that the loyalties of people living in them
will change, despite the different names adopted by the new administrative counties.'
(Government statement 1974.)
The
Yorkshire Ridings' Society aims to maintain and protect this distinctive identity by
campaigning for;
| Roadside boundary signs to mark the Ridings. | |
| A Yorkshire address for all parts of Yorkshire. | |
| Accurate representation of Yorkshire in all respects. | |
| Local government to more closely reflect Yorkshires true geography. |
The YRS campaign has had some recent success in all these aims although much remains to be done.
The Society is affiliated to the Association of British Counties.
